પોતાને ભવિષ્યની પેઢીઓ કેવી રીતે ઓળખશે એ સંદર્ભમાં ઉમાશંકર જોશીએ એક વખત કહ્યું હતું કે 'જાહેરજીવનના પ્રશ્નોમાં સંકળાયેલા (involved) હોવાં છતાં, અથવા એ કારણે જ, એક કવિ તરીકે થોડાં ઊર્મિકાવ્યો લખ્યાં, અને કવિતા તેમજ નાટકમાં મહત્ત્વનું અર્પણ કર્યું. સારું ગદ્ય થોડું લખ્યું અને સૌંદર્ય તેમજ પરિપ્રેક્ષ્યની સમજ માટે કદાચ વંચાય' આ વિનમ્ર નિવેદન એમના જીવન અને સર્જનને ટૂંકમાં પણ સર્વગ્રાહી રીતે વર્ણવે છે.

ઉત્તર ગુજરાતના એક નાનકડા ગામડામાં 1911માં જન્મેલા કવિ ઉમાશંકર જોશીએ ડુંગરિયાળ પ્રદેશની પ્રકૃતિ અને ગામડાઓનાં સામાજિક જીવન તેમજ મેળાઓ, ઉત્સવોમાંથી શબ્દસર્જનની પ્રેરણા મેળવી. ગાંધીજીની સ્વાતંત્ર્ય ચળવળમાં જોડાઈને તેમણે ઇતિહાસના વિશાળ ફલકની સમજ કેળવી. વીસમી સદીના દેશના અને દુનિયાના પ્રશ્નો-- સામાજિક અસમાનતાથી માંડીને અણુયુદ્ધના વિષમતા --ના પડકારોને એક કલાકાર તરીકે ઝીલવાનો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો, વીસમી સદીમાં અનેકરૂપે પ્રગટ થયેલી હિંસા અને બધાના કેન્દ્રમાં રહેલી મનુષ્ય માટેની નિસબત એ એમના સમગ્ર જીવન અને સર્જનની સામાન્ય વૈચારિક ભૂમિ રહી છે.

શબ્દની શક્તિ એમને મન આસપાસની દુનિયાને અજવાળવામાં અને તેને આપણે માટે સુલભ કરવામાં તેમજ આપણી અંદર રહેલી શક્તિઓનો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં રહેલી છે.

સમગ્ર જીવન દરમ્યાન તેમણે કવિતા, ટૂંકી વાર્તા, એકાંકી નાટકો, નિબંધો, પ્રવાસવર્ણનો, ચરિત્ર રેખાંકનો, વિવેચનનાં પુસ્તકો તેમજ શિક્ષણ, સમાજ, રાજકારણ, અને સમકાલીન બનાવો વિશે અસંખ્ય લખાણો પ્રગટ કર્યાં હતાં. લગભગ ચાર દાયકા (1947-1984) સુધી તેમણે 'સંસ્કૃતિ' સામયિકનું સંપાદન કર્યું. પોતે સ્થાપેલા ગંગોત્રી ટ્રસ્ટના નેજા હેઠળ ભારતની તેમજ વિદેશી ભાષાઓની કૃતિઓના અનુવાદિત પુસ્તકો પ્રગટ કર્યાં હતાં.

એક સાહિત્યકાર તરીકે ગુજરાતના તેમજ દેશના જાહેરજીવન સાથે અડધી સદીથી પણ વધારે સમય સુધી તેઓ સંકળાયેલા હતા. ગુજરાત યુનિવર્સિટીમાં ગુજરાતીના અધ્યાપક અને પછીથી કુલપતિ, વિશ્વભારતી યુનિવર્સિટીના કુલાધિપતિ, રાજ્યસભાના સભ્ય, સાહિત્ય અકાદમીના પ્રમુખ તેમજ દેશની સાહિત્ય, સંસ્કૃતિ અને શિક્ષણની અનેક સંસ્થાઓના સભ્ય તરીકે તેમણે સેવાઓ આપી હતી. જાહેરજીવનના સામાજિક, રાજકીય અને આર્થિક સવાલો પ્રત્યેની તેમની સચિંત અને નિસબત ધરાવતા નાગરિક તરીકેની ઉલ્લેખનીય ભૂમિકા હતી.

ઉમાશંકર જોશી પોતાને ગુજરાતી સાહિત્યકાર કરતાં 'ગુજરાતીમાં લખતા એક ભારતીય સાહિત્યકાર' તરીકે ઓળખાવવાનું વધારે પસંદ કરતા હતા. આ કેવળ એ વાતનું પ્રમાણ નથી કે એમણે પોતાનામાં વૈવિધ્યપૂર્ણ ભારતીય સાહિત્ય અને સંસ્કૃતિને પૂરી રીતે સમાવ્યા હતા. પરંતુ, આ વિધાનમાં પ્રાન્તીયતાના સંકુચિત માળખામાંથી મુક્ત કરીને ભારતીય સાહિત્યને વૈવિધ્યપૂર્ણ સમગ્રતામાં જોવાનો એમનો આગ્રહ પણ રહેલો છે.

When asked how he would liked to be remembered by the future generations, Umashankar Joshi once said: "A poet who, in spite of, or because of, his involvement in public affairs wrote a few lyrics, and made significant contribution to poetry and drama; wrote some good prose and might perhaps be read for a sense of beauty and perspective". This modest statement sums up his life and work briefly but comprehensively.

Born in Bamna, a small village of north Gujarat, in 1911 Umashankar Joshi received inspiration for creative writing from the beautiful surroundings of the hilly region and the social life of the villages and fairs and festivals held there. He joined the freedom struggle led by Gandhi and gained an understanding of history. As a creative writer he responded to the challenges of the 20th century ranging from social inequality to the existential anguish of the nuclear age. Concern with the roots of violence manifesting itself in various forms and man at the centre of it has been the main site of his work.

The power of the word lay for him in tapping the immense possibilities of the man and to make the real world accessible to him.

During his life Umashankar Joshi wrote several books of poetry, short stories, plays, essays, travelogues, criticism, as well as on education, politics and contemporary issues and events. He edited 'Sanskriti', a journal for nearly four decades (1947-1984). Moreover he published several books of translations from Indian and foreign languages under the aegis of Gangotri Trust founded by him.

As a writer Umashankar Joshi was deeply concerned with the social, economic and political issues of his times. He played a significant role in the public life of Gujarat and the country for over five decades. He served in various capacities such as professor of Gujarati and later vice chancellor of Gujarat University, chancellor of Visva Bharti University founded by Tagore, Member of Rajya Sabha, President of Sahitya Akademi and member of several educational, cultural and literary institutions of the country.

Umashankar Joshi preferred to introduce himself as 'an Indian writer writing in Gujarati' rather than a Gujarati writer. This not only suggests that he had imbibed in himself the multifarious Indian culture but also more importantly, his insistence on freeing Indian literature in different languages from narrow regionalism and seeing it in its varied totality.
