ઉત્તર ગુજરાતના એક નાનકડા ગામડા બામણામાં 1911માં જન્મેલા કવિ ઉમાશંકર જોશીએ ડુંગરિયાળ પ્રદેશની પ્રકૃતિ અને ગામડાઓનાં સામાજિક જીવન તેમજ મેળાઓ, ઉત્સવોમાંથી શબ્દસર્જનની પ્રેરણા મેળવી. ગાંધીજીની સ્વાતંત્ર્ય ચળવળમાં જોડાઈને તેમણે ઇતિહાસના વિશાળ ફલકની સમજ કેળવી. વીસમી સદીના દેશના અને દુનિયાના પ્રશ્નો-- સામાજિક અસમાનતાથી માંડીને અણુયુદ્ધના વિષમતા --ના પડકારોને એક કલાકાર તરીકે ઝીલવાનો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો, વીસમી સદીમાં અનેકરૂપે પ્રગટ થયેલી હિંસા અને બધાના કેન્દ્રમાં રહેલી મનુષ્ય માટેની નિસબત એ એમના સમગ્ર જીવન અને સર્જનની સામાન્ય વૈચારિક ભૂમિ રહી છે.

Born in Bamna, a small village of north Gujarat in 1911, Umashankar Joshi received inspiration for creative writing from the beautiful surroundings of the hilly region as well as the social life of villages and fairs and festivals held there. He joined the freedom struggle led by Gandhi and gained an understanding of history. As a creative writer he responded to the challenges of the 20th century ranging from social inequality to the existential anguish of the nuclear age. Concern with the roots of violence manifesting itself in various forms and man at the centre of it has been the main site of his work.
